Sitting on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Sarnia holds a central position at the mouth of the St. Clair River, along the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway System. This location marks an important international border connecting Michigan and Ontario.

With its strategic position, Sarnia functions as Canada’s gateway to the NAFTA Superhighway, serving as the crossroads for the I-69, I-94, and 400 series highways via the Blue Water Bridge international border crossing.

The city is located within a one-day drive of 65 per cent of the US market, less than a two-hour drive north of Detroit, Michigan, approximately one hour west of London, Ontario, and just three hours from downtown Toronto.

Sarnia is accessible by air via Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport, by water via Sarnia Harbour, by land via Ontario Highway 402, and by rail via the St. Clair Tunnel, CN Rail, and VIA Rail. It is the urban center of Lambton County, ranked among the Top 7 Intelligent Communities in the World by the Intelligent Community Forum in 2019 for its use of information and communications technologies to increase inclusive prosperity.
